You will be in good company. Hens are hot! It is estimated that 500,000 households are now keeping chickens in their back gardens. Hard economic times are partly driving the trend. People are realising they can save money on eggs by having their own birds.

The nostalgia factor is playing a part, too. Many of us have fond memories of grandparents with allotments. Hens are part of the trendy ‘good life’, along with growing your own veg. They are also fun and endearing, if slightly quirky creatures. Children love them, of course, and will vie with each other to collect the eggs in the morning. And the eggs taste great - supermarket ones are so insipid by comparison.
